Faunsdale, AL | No, JD never went for a torque converter except on the backhoes and I guess the equivalent industrial tractor as mentioned above.
I think they all probably used the BorgWarner reverser unit instead of a clutch. On the 310D the reverser and “clutch” are actually electric solenoid controlled clutch packs so you get ability to have a thumb button on the loader joystick to kick the “clutch” out so you can rev the engine while raising the loader, dumping the bucket etc. without having the torque converter loaded. The unit mounts to back of engine and then a driveshaft with two universal joints runs back to transmission and rear differential housing.
