Probably a little of all the above.
I remember my Grandpa had a field that he had never fertilized. It raised a very good crop every year. One year he put P and k on it. After that he had to put P and k on every year to get a good crop.
I think what ever was releasing the nutrients didn't work as well after he added the commercial fertilizer.


Commercial fertilizer is salty, excessive salt will sterilize soil. Cover crops and biologicals are starting to become popular, is it cause the salinity has decreased microbials in the soil?

I think this post is going to generate more questions than actual answers…..
