I did 3.5" higher pad on top of my bottom pad just used 2x4 after bottom pad was poured and pinned it to bottom. made it about 4' wide I believe that let the bunks sit on and left about 16" for the cows to step on. Also helps with them not crapping in the bunks since they don't step on with there back legs. Also did it around the waters the same way.
