| There is a thread on here with a guy wanting to know the best way to market a few head of fats. The common thought seems to be haul them somewhere there is an honest to God COMPETITIVE fat cattle auction. I live in an area that once had hundreds of farmer-feeders. They are virtually all gone today because of the stranglehold the four major packers have on the packing industry. They were simply put out of business because it is eaiser to control a few large feeders. So gone is the option to walk some of the relatively cheap corn off the farm and add value to it. Gone are the people that relied on feeding cattle as part of a diversified operation. Gone are elevators and feed stores that relied on these feeders.
This all happened with the help of The National Corporate Beef Association who has time and again stood in the way of any measures to rein in the (often corrupt as well as illegal) market control these four packers have. There is no "conspiracy' theory in this. It happened just as it happened to the hog industry before. NCBA represents the interests of the major packers. Though it seems JBS has left. Evidently there are things even the Batista brothers won't be a part of, and that is saying a lot.
