Why Bayer ever wanted to buy Monsanto in the first place is a head scratcher.

If they end up paying 10% on this deal would still be a pretty good chunk of change.

Things looked pretty bad for Monsanto back around 1998. I saw the CEO publicly apologize and then disappear into obscurity.
Monsanto was spun off as an independent.
Since then it seems the company has been a bit of a hot potato that burns anyone who touches it.
