NW Missouri | Ritchies are fine, but IMO you can get something just as good for less money if you aren't concerned about name brand. This is year 3 and it has caused no problems yet. We also have an older Ritchie with the stainless trough on a rented farm. During the recent cold stretch where our lows were around -17 or so, neither one froze up with 50ish head on them (both have as big a pipe as will fit underneath them going 4-5' down). I very seldom gets any colder than that here, so that's good enough for me.
For non-heated, I like Cobetts if you're on rural water or a well and don't want to let them run over. Yes you have to peck them with a hammer each day when it's below zero. But you ought to be checking them when it's that cold anyway. If you're on a pond, any tank will work and let it run over. | |
