Milford, IL | I had a hard drive fail unexpectedly and without warning recently - fortunately this machine was not critical to the operation but served as a wake up call for me to act.
Lots of spreadsheets, QB backup files, family pictures I had already stored on a 1TB external hard drive. This works great. However, it is not the same as a cloned hard drive - if the drive on my main work PC were to fail it would be an inconvenience and I decided to clone the hard drive. I bought a Startech cloner - model SDOCK2U33RE - and another hard drive. Removed the original drive from the PC, stuck both drives in the cloner, and it makes an exact copy, sector by sector. BE SURE TO PUT THE DRIVES IN THE PROPER SLOT. Swapping source and destination would be a disaster.
I put the original drive in the safe, installed the new cloned drive and turned on the PC and it worked exactly like intended. If the hard drive in the machine goes down, throw the backup in and go to work.
