Madison Co. Virginia | I've heard before that if cows/heifers run out of water, that you need to limit their water intake for the first few hours or day to avoid swelling the brain.
I had an older Jersey with ketosis, difficult calving, and a sprained leg, all at the same time as this big rainstorm we got. I didn't realize she was dehydrated until this morning, so I figured I would quickly remedy it with 10 gallons of warm water put down her gullet with a stomach tube. I had no indication that I got it down her lungs, but she was dead a few hours later. Was my rapid water feeding likely the cause of death?
If so, how do I avoid that in the future? Add electrolytes to the water? What electrolytes? Feed the water in smaller doses? How small of doses? | |
