Lifting height will be the biggest factor. All I've used in the past would lift about high enough to transfer from a bed to a chair, they wouldn't reach high enough to mount a horse....maybe a pony. An elevated platform with the hoyer on top, that the horse may stand next to may work. Operation is easy, it essentially operates like an engine hoist/cherry picker.
