Subject: educate me on end vs top fill propane tanks

I need to get educated on propane tanks as I'll be buying multiple soon. I have an immediate need for a 1,000 gallon to put on the house as I convert the house to propane from a fuel oil burner and in the next 5 years, I intend to put up bins and dryer that'll need to be on LP since NG isn't anywhere near the farm. I like having 1000 gallon tanks for the likelihood of being able to survive an entire season on a filling.

When I heated the shop a few years ago, the local supplier had a few tanks at very reasonable prices. Since then, tank prices went up and availability went down, so I've been looking at new/used/refurbished. The end fill tanks are always showing up cheaper. What's the deal with them? Are they just all old or is there something about their function that makes them less desirable? I had always assumed a tank was a tank was a tank..... Internet searching hasn't yielded much.

thanks
