I got an end fill a few yrs ago. It is very old (i think a 50s or early 60s tank) very well maintained, not a lick of rust on it. The gauge is on the end, you have to crack a bleeder and turn a dial until white comes out, that tells you the fill level. I wouldnt be afraid of getting another end fill tank, if it is well maintained.
Definitely make sure the data plate is there. As others have said it wont get filled without it
