NE Iowa | Sometimes I've seen cows not 'let down' their milk right away, and production picks up later. Had an older cow with twins this past spring - twins didn't seem 'full' for first week or so, so I offered a bottle once a day if they wanted it - which at first they did. After about 10 days mom's swelling & hardness in her udder had softened up and she started letting down her milk so they could clean her out - and they stopped wanting any bottle supplement. That also happened on a cow this fall - our vet suggested giving oxcytosin to help her 'let down' her milk. Tried it but it didn't seem to help for her. After a week or 10 days the udder softened and the calves were getting enough to be content. May not work same for your cow, but I'd suggest offering bottle supplements for a while IF they want it - and hopefully in short time they won't need it. | |
