My brother had similar problems, found out it worked if he left the laces tied, and just hooked and unhooked them from the little hook things on top. After recovery, he kept doing that.
Watching how quick he could put his work boots on and off, I started doing the same thing. If your work boots have the little hooks, maybe try that?
