He was probably talking about using basement jacks, the kind with two 3' pipes with holes every three inches and a screw at the top. That would take a lot of jacks but it would work. You could do the same thing with 2x4's as props and a wedge to pound in every week or so. Or a stud wall with the studs at alternating angles makes a "kicker".

The biggest issue is where are you going to lift from? is there a central load bearing wall that you could put a plate over and lift from? Is this a two story with a full attic with a high ceiling that has plenty of room to work in? Is the house worth the work? A few pics of the house outside and inside the attic would get some better suggestions. And then are you going to sister new rafters along side?
