north central Iowa, Hampton | my machines are in the basement, so I haven't done it, but I've seen washers set on top of something that looks like the base pan for a shower, with its own drain. The idea is, a leak is supposed to be contained and drained away. About the only trouble I've heard of with that system is that it needs a regular dose of water to keep the trap underneath full so sewer gas doesn't come back up.
Something to think about it if you have to tear into any of the floor.
