Subject: Categorizing shop built equipment in Quickbooks

eastern sd
I am building a tandem axle converter dolly out of some parts I have lying around and some parts that I am purchasing. When it is done it will have about $3000 worth of parts in it, I'm not sure how to record it as a piece of equipment in QuickBooks since it was never actually "purchased". Should I just say it was purchased for $0 and assign the parts I buy for it as repair expense? I'm not really worried about depreciating it but I would like to keep track of what I have into it and it will be on my balance sheet when it is done.
