Not always toast. Have seen them break their neck with the cotyledons locked in the ground and the unifoliate leaves emerged from the stem where it broke and they survived. I flagged quite a few of the plants that did this and you couldn’t tell them from the ones that emerged normally at harvest. There were in the neighborhood of 35-40,000 plants per acre that did this.
