I broke one, right after I bought it.  They sent me a replacement piece.  I have learned how to set the depth stop and have not had any issues.  I use it every other day during the fall.  I see where another company sells a filter blaster, but has plastic hose, rather than the steel tubes.  That should make it more forgiving.
