Bracket Polypores, a family of Fungi. Most likely growing on an oak tree, will cause a rotten spot on the tree. Most likely tree had a wound at this growing spot.
I wouldn't eat, but I'm far from an expert on most things, especially fungi. I do eat fungi, however the wife buys them at the store.
Mushroom?
