I'm going to guess based on the timelines in this article that the one you linked is overselling their capabilities. There's plenty to criticize Apple and Garmin about, but they make fairly reliable products for the most part. If a Chinese knockoff brand had figured out something they hadn't they would be on it pretty quick.
