Kettle Moraine, WI | We are in different climates but I would offer a thought about using a spring grain like oats into the mix. Thought being it would keep growing until frozen off versus winter rye shutting down to vernalize. Iirc oats terminates at about 13 degrees. Up here fall planted oats can be very lush and take up nitrogen plus they can be cheap seed. Variables like your climate and how an individual year turns out but could fit into a mix with a targeted objective. Oats are also somewhat tolerant of planting depth. | |
