And UP riding has two very distinction and different categories for machines so depends what one wants -- Trail vs. mountain.

Been riding off-trail there with big long track/paddle sleds since 2005. Average ground speed over a day is 8 mph. Average track speed? Way higher. Typical day spend less than a mile on the trail. Hate coming face to face with someone going way too fast, cutting the corner, on the way to the next bar. And don't get me started on the stupid hand signals. =)
So you’re the guy they were talking about on the news that thinks the trails are for everybody but him. If you don’t own it, stay off it is my motto.

It looks Shuerman was talking about riding off trail in the UP of Michigan. A lot of land up there is public and perfectly legal to ride off trail. As for private land I agree with you, if you don't have permission stay off it.
