SW OH
I've replied to these kinds of questions before since changing oil funds my farming habit. First, synthetic oils are not worth the extra cost except in severe high heat conditions. Conventional oils have caught up to synthetics as far as longevity. Some brands are better than others and thicker is not always better.

At work we used Rotella T3, 15W40 for years. When we asked Sopus about going to 500 hour intervals they said sure, but not any more. Castrol approached us with lots of data going 1,000 plus hours and good numbers. We ended up with CAT DEO-ULS 10W30 and a price guarantee through this year for $10.XX a gallon delivered in bulk. We sample everything. 750 hours on the CAT oil has better numbers than the Rotella does at 250 hours. It has made a believer out of me. We occasionally have something that slips through the cracks and goes well over 1,000 hours and the sample still comes back good.
