| Yes you can. I have two Dells that do not have a Ethernet port on the computer. I have one that plugs into a USB 3.x and it runs at around 850 mbs at the end of a switch and 125 feet of Ethernet cord. This one has 3 USB A ports on it too and is in a metal packages.
I have another (wife's computer) that is to a USB C thunderbolt 3 port that only runs at 400 mbs per second on a 10 foot Ethernet cord. This one is a really cheap dongle that I bought when USB C was just coming out. My wife does not gripe so I have not done an upgrade. This has 3 USB A ports on it too but is plastic. Works
