Subject: RE: Irrigation well gearhead ratios

Usually was determined by the original power unit that was on a particular well and the pumping capacity of the well. Automotive engines running on propane or natural gas make their power at higher rpm’s so they have a deeper reduction.

Medium duty diesels V8’s like the 3208 and DV-550’s ran at 2300-2800 rpm and would often have 5:4 or 11:10 reductions.

HD I-6 diesels typical ran between 1800-2200 rpm and would often have 1:1 or 11:10 reductions.

Depending on the gear head manufacturer you could swap the input and output gears and reverse the ratio.
