Lump jaw is my guess. Dad's cattle would get it . A break in skin of mouth could form an abscess. It was caused by eating rough feed; around here it was mostly caused by Foxtail Barley grass seed.
It needed to be lanced and disinfected. Dad usually sold the cow for slaughter.
