Subject: Hail damage appearance payment taxable income?

Central Minnesota

Had a hail storm a month or so ago that made a a lot of dents in steel roofed buildings.  The insurance company issued a check for appearance damage.  If replaced they will pay quite a bit more. I don't know if it covers the full cost of replacement or not.

I don't know if the dents will affect the longevity of the buildings. Pretty sure they won't in my lifetime.

Anyway, I was wondering if the appearance damage check is counted as income.  It is actually quite a substantial payment as I had just updated values in December because of the high cost of building now days.
