SouthEast Iowa | Onions-did you plant sets or plants? Plants will get bigger sized. Plant them shallow and once they are established, ring them. Dig some of the dirt away from the bulb, let a little bit of the bulb and roots covered. Some varieties get bigger than others, I really like Texas legend for nice big onions. Here's a picture of a softball size one from last year.
