Subject: RE: MFA 303 HYDRAULIC OIL

Faunsdale, AL
It’s usable as a hydraulic oil, but I don’t want to trust any of them in wet brake/clutch applications. The old black rivet-on brake linings were standard on JD tractors when 303 fluid was the current spec. They haven’t been available as replacement parts for a long time. PTO clutches and wheel brake linings are a brown material that does not stand moisture. I’ve done brakes on several of my old tractors and found that on some of them, I could easily flake the linings off the backing plates with a thumbnail.

After that experience, I haven’t used any “303” oil except as a hydraulic oil. A straight hydraulic oil is frequently cheaper than the “303” bucket anyway.
