Sounds like clutch issue if your grinding goes on as you are letting the clutch out AFTER its in gear. Is this what you are describing? Can you stop the tractor in the higher gears witout killing the motor? Does it have a grease fitting on the throwout bearing? Not solving your problem but trying to pinpoint where your problem might be.
