Subject: Case IH planter closing wheels

I'm on my first planting year with a Case IH 1200 series planter. We started planting with our old JD and then got the Case 1/2 way through planting corn.

I was looking at fields today and some of our 2nd year corn and it's having trouble getting through some crusty soil. Right over the row where the press wheel ran is rock hard with a crack right over the seed trench. When I dig, the soil next to the seed trench comes up in a big hard chunk like a brick.

Is this a problem with case IH planters? We had the JD for 10 years and I don't remember ever having this much crust over the rows.

What went wrong, or what did I do wrong?
