Get a SM 3000 population monitor.

It will pay for itself the 1st time that you either set the transmission wrong or have the chain jump a sprocket. Its also very helpful in fine tuning the air pressure.

Should be able to buy a used one for $500 or less, just call around to White dealers until you find one.
