If you are comfortable with the lathe, just take 3/4" round stock and thread it as needed, then heat the other end with a torch and bend the J on it.

We had a set of DMI duals years ago which had a 'guaranteed' hook which was made of plate and welded to the rod....we finally quit having trouble after we built some by bending the hook on, as stated above.

I would suggest putting interlocking lugs on the wheels to transfer torque to the duals, as Versatile did, also. That will greatly reduce the load on the bolts.
