If your cooler is leaking into the trans you will probably find coolant at the drain plug of the trans. You will probably end up pulling the trans and checking it all out. Hope you have a good mechanic-friend nearby. The mud you are seeing is probably clutch disc facing, should have a bronze color to it. Good bet is you are loosing pressure to a clutch pack, due to worn o'rings-etc. Expect to find a few other surprises once you get in there.

Its all part of the yellow habit we have.
