Scottville, 49454 Northwest Michigan | Matt,
We do it on our alfalfa fields all summer. Granted, we're not using straw for bedding. We use sawdust, which allows us to spread it on the hay fields without leaving clumps. We also have a vertical beater on the back of our spreader which enables us to spread a very even and fine spread pattern. We started doing this in the summer of 2007. We've noticed a definite improvement in our alfalfa production. Must be we weren't putting enough conventional fertilizer on before.
What type of bedding are you using? I'd be a little concerned about trying to put straw-bedded manure on alfalfa during the growing season. I'm not so sure I could get it broke up enough to not suffocate the alfalfa. However, after the alfalfa has gone dormant in the late fall, I wouldn't be concerned about that.
