Subject: Difficult weather for calving season

Driftless SW Wisconsin

The low temp last night in SW WI was 14 deg f with the ground covered with ice some snow and frozen mud. The NWS forecast lows for the next few nights are 17, 17, 14, 18, 22,....  the historical average low for the next week is around 30 deg.   Tough going for a calf born out on pasture at night in this weather. Ones already born are doing well but getting past that first day or two can be a challenge.  I put some hay out on a high protected spot and am hoping the ones that look like they are really ready to calve do it in daylight up on the hill.  I hope things are manageable for you folks in MN and the Dakotas who got hit worse from this last storm.  Jim at Dawn
