Instead of a rope, I like the hook on the end of an extending pole.  This allows for 'grabbing' the calf even if momma is standing right over it in the bottom of the ditch, and it also allows for releasing the calf after you get it to safety without having to deal with the potentially stressed momma. 


But yes, I agree with ya, it's a lot easier to use any tool available instead of carrying the calves up a steep, slippery bank and trying to keep your balance while doing it (especially by yourself).  Even worse is trying to carrry it if the calf is on the bigger side.
