Subject: Re: beef breeds: temperament

Hoisington, KS
We have had really good luck with Gelbvieh bulls, but we also are picky about disposition when we buy bulls. We found a breeder we've had really good luck with calm bulls and there is no reason to look elsewhere. We are calving 1st calf heifers and there are a few we kept back that we shouldn't have because they got the same attitude as their sire, who went to the salebarn after one year, so it is hereditary and you don't want to mess with crazy 1st calf heifers if they need help calving. We also use Red angus bulls and we buy from a guy private treaty, which I really like because you can walk into his pen of 80-100 bulls and you know pretty quick which ones you don't want just based on temperament.
