I agree with you on the tail docking. I have done so for years. But I must say that I've never seen any cows, anywhere, docked as short as yours. When done as baby calves, I use the width of the palm of my hand as a measure with the top of it at the lower tip of calf's vulva and then put the band on the tail even with the lower side of my palm. In other words about 4 or 5 fingers wide . This leaves the tail long enough as cows that it reaches to the top of or a little down onto the rear udder. They are short enough to stay clean and dry in freestalls identical to yours. I read somewhere some years ago that very short docked tails had been found to cause vaginal/uterine infections leading to more infertility problems. Don't know if there is anything to it or not, though.
