Had a late s680 that had same issue before taking it apart- turning hard part way by hand. we had to pry the vertical auger off the lower gearcase. noticed vertical auger had been rubbing on lower gear box housing so we replaced the output shaft of lower gear box and the vertical auger.. turned smooth after
