Some Honda models are VERY particular about having the oil level full, and with the proper oil and a clean filter. There are sensors that are there to protect things in cases of low oil, low pressure, etc, and often it not wanting to shift is its way of going into limp mode.
Before you do anything else, fill it all the way to 'full' or slightly more according to the instructions in the owner's manual (some you check oil by threading dipstick down, some you do not and that can make a notable difference in oil level). My brother had an ATV with the Hondamatic, and it started doing odd things, and he called the dealer who told him to fill it all the way to full or slightly over, and use only Honda oil and filter, and the viscosity called for in the manual. After that, it went years with zero issues. | |
