Faunsdale, AL | I think carriage bolts can be soft but there’s some that do fine. I’ve got several disks with scrapers held on with carriage bolts. Only problem I have is when they’re really rusty after 30-40 years they’ll spin out instead of nut coming loose.
Not a whole lot cheaper but just for a sanity check, McMaster Carr lists grade 5 zinc plated 1/2x1-1/4 for $12.10 for pack of 10.
They also list grade 2 which I think is what you get from Fastenal and most hardware stores. They seem to be for assembling actual carriages! Bought a bunch of 5/16 x 2 to bolt in a set of auger trough liner sheets a few years ago. Had to get myself calibrated so I didn’t pop them off pulling the 14 gauge sheets down into the bottom of the header. I’m sure they’re strong enough for the job but just barely! | |
