South Central Iowa | Whatever fits your management style best. I know guys that want them done by planting time, so they spend January, February and March living with them. I start April 15, so I'm calving and farming at the same time, but it all seems to work because I don't have too much of either cattle or row crops. Some in the area went to fall, they haul calves to grass may 1, take them mineral once a week, and round them up when the snow flies. I can only offer that we used to start around March 20, always fought one or two snows/cold rains and a lot of years mud as frost went out. Backing up to mid April helped a bunch, at least it's "warmer mud". If I was going to move my calving date again it'd be even later, maybe may 1. Just want to beat the flies in the summer. | |
