You ask about "Problem solving, critical thinking, they need to "learn how to learn"... questioning whether some sort of hands on homeschool with work experience would be a better way..."
Gee if only there was some sort of program in the public schools to give students real-world, hands-on experience and learning in actual jobs, individual enterprise, and group task situations....
Oh, wait! There IS! it is called FFA and Vocational Agriculture!
