SW Minnesota
I don’t know which order of Mennonite your neighbors are. Hutterite’s and Amish are also a subset of Mennonites I understand. I have a lot of respect for all of them. As a group I don’t think worthy to much about a big world view in raising their kids but What they do seem to do right is teach their kids to value a work ethic. So often they are successfully making a living that most kids turn their noses up on. And lots of times that work leads to more skilled work that pays better than anything else like your machine shop neighbor. How many times have you heard people and their kids turn up their noses when work like roofing a barn, washing barns loading pigs picking rocks, building pole barns and bins. It used be the typical bin crew had a bunch high school kids on it. My kids did most of those jobs without getting off the farm and they did very well in public school.
