Subject: Tig welder question

thumb of mi
Looking to buy a Tig welder. Mostly to weld stainless pipe but I want to be able to do aluminum too. I will likely get a Miller brand because we have a helpful dealer close.
Some of the machines will weld up to 1/4” or 3/8. If I want to weld thicker material can I just do 2 passes or or is a machine rated for 1/4 just not going to get it done on 1/2”? they are rated for 210 amps. I won’t do much thick stuff.
I see some are multi function. It would be nice to only have 1 welder to store but a little concerned that it will do everything but nothing well. Am I wrong?
Some of the new inverter units have many options for different styles of welds like pulse ect. Is it worth it to have those settings?
I know there are some accomplished welders on here hoping for some real world experience. Tia.
