If I think I'm making genetic progress then on average it might take a cow 2.5 calves to make her replacement, so 4.5 years on average? If I'm culling all problem cows regardless of genetic potential it will take a couple years to clean out the herd, but I see no reason you couldn't get a herd that averages 8+ years. My oldest cow right now will be 12 next spring, and could be mistaken for half that. I've had a couple get to 17 or 18.
