Madison Co. Virginia | To explain -- Well-experienced cows are a lot of fun to work with, if they can be kept healthy. I only have a few cows in my herd that are over seven years old, and none of them are over age ten.
I was visiting with a Jersey farmer in Ireland, who mentioned that the typical replacement rate for Jerseys is 12/100, compared to 20/100 for Irish Friesian herds. Those numbers would indicate an average cull age of 8.3 years and 5 years, respectively. Are these numbers attainable for a TMR-fed freestall-housed herd? Can they be pushed even higher? | |
