I'd test your hay before committing to a protein supplement. If the hay is 10% protein and a 50% TDN, adding more protein is mostly going to loosen them up. In that case you would want to add an energy supplement. I think in some cases adding a protein supplement is actually counterproductive in that it gives them the runs and causes things to move through too quickly, just like cows sometimes lose a bit of condition on spring grass that isn't mature enough. It also makes things generally messier and can increase the likelihood of running into infections like pinkeye.
