Aggieland | I tried a spring garden for the first time on the property and the grass out ran me and I grew some vegetables in the grass. I harvested my potatoes yesterday and got about 60# off of two 40ft rows. I was impressed. The sizes ranged from key lime size to the size of your fist. I planted reds and Yukon golds. My onions did terrible. None bigger than a lime. Corn is still standing and should be ready soon, peas did okay, okra is still at it, peppers and tomatoes are okay, broccoli and spinach never made it, carrots got washed right after planting so they were everywhere, a few small ones were good.
What can I do in preparation for a fall garden that will help me keep the grass under control? Should I spray roundup on it? Burn it? Keep tilling it once a week? Is there something I don’t know that will work?
Also what are the vegetables I should be planting and when? I’m in central Texas. My kids have really come to enjoy the garden and I’m loving watching them learn that food doesn’t come from a store.
I’d guess based on our heat I wouldn’t plant a fall garden until October but I just don’t know.
